Carmen & Lola (Original title: Carmen y Lola) is a Spanish love story with dramatic elements from 2018 . Directed by Arantxa Echevarría , Zaira Romero and Rosy Rodriguez play two young Romnija from Madrid who fall in love against the resistance of tradition and society. The film made its debut at the 2018 Cannes International Film Festival , where it was selected for screening in the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs series . The film start in Germany was May 9, 2019.

action

Lola grows up with her brother Miguel in a traditional Roma family in Spain and at the beginning of the film seems to accept her role as a woman in this context. She looks forward to a future as a mother and housewife. The family is planning a wedding from the close social circle for the young Lola. Shortly before, however, Lola met Carmen, who is a year older than her, has different ideas about life, wants to become a teacher and live freely and independently. Lola quickly feels drawn to Carmen and a love affair develops between the two. However, this does not correspond to the ideas and norms of the society around them.

reception

Variety judged the film itself Operating the many clichés surrounding the coming out of gay in restrictive cultures. However, thanks in particular to the praiseworthy camera work by Pilar Sánchez Díaz, he does grant insights into the traditions and rites of the Roma in Spain. Even the mostly non-professional actors have done justice to their roles.

The Hollywood Reporter called Carmen & Lola a "pleasant but predictable queer awakening drama" (dt. Pleasant but predictable queer revival Drama) and also praised the acting work of non-professional cast.
