The young dug lives with his tribe in a green valley during the Stone Age . The mighty Lord Nooth is targeting this valley because there are mineral resources there. He drives Dug into the wasteland with his people. Dug succeeds in challenging Lord Nooth to a fight on the "sacred lawn". If Dug and his people win, they can return to their valley. The fight is a football game that Dug's ancestors practiced early on. Cave paintings tell of it. In fact, Dug and his teammates manage to win.

The film was set to music at the Cinephon in Berlin . Pierre Peters-Arnolds wrote the dialogue book and directed the dialogue.
The sounds of Hognob, a wild boar owned by Dug, are made by Nick Park , the director of the film.

The film service judged that the "lovingly and lavishly produced clay animation film" lost "through a myriad of characters of esprit and narrative madness". The film lives from “archetypal antagonisms”, “surprising moments tend to result from details on the edge”. The audience gave the film a less than good rating; in the Rotten Tomatoes rating, only 49% found the film good.
The film grossed around $ 55 million worldwide.
There is a homage to Ray Harryhausen in the credits of the film. The two dinosaurs fighting each other in the film (Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops) are introduced as "Ray" and "Harry" at the end of the credits.
