action

Museum guide Mary Beth tells a group of children about Mexican legends. One of them is set in the town of San Angel and revolves around the Book of Life , which contains the story of everyone in the world.

The spirits La Muerte , mistress of the realm of the remembered, and Xibalba , master of the realm of the forgotten, visit San Angel on the day of the dead and watch the boys Manolo and Joaquín fight for the affection of the girl María. The two ghosts bet on which of the two María will marry one day. If it is Manolo, La Muerte wins and Xibalbá is no longer allowed to interfere in the fate of the living. If María Joaquín marries, La Muerte and Xibalbá swap kingdoms. On the day of the festival, María freed a herd of her father that was to be slaughtered. As a punishment, she is sent to a school in Spain. To say goodbye, Manolo gives her a little pig, pig, and she gives him a new guitar.

Years later, with the help of Xibalba, Joaquín has become the hero of San Angel and protects the place from the bandits. Manolo was trained as a bullfighter by his father . When María returns, Manolo's first bullfight takes place. But he refuses to kill the bull and disappoints his father. But María is impressed by it. However, she learns that her father has already promised Joaquín that he will stay in the village and protect the residents. Nevertheless, she secretly meets with Manolo and they confess their love. In order to win, Xibalba lets María bite a snake so that she appears dead. Manolo lets himself be outwitted by him, is bitten twice and actually dies. Now María has no choice but to marry Joaquín and Xibalba has won the bet.

When Manolo arrives in the realm of the remembered, he meets many deceased relatives there, including his mother Carmen. But Xibalba has already taken power in the empire. Together with his mother and grandfather, Manolo travels to the realm of the forgotten and has to endure many dangers. In doing so, they enter the cave of souls, where the candle maker guards everyone's life. The candle maker sees that Manolo's pages in the Book of Life are empty because Xibalba has outwitted him. But now Manolo can rewrite these pages. He can tell about Xibalbá's trick in the realm of the forgotten and La Muerte. Xibalba admits his ruse and wants to give Manolo his life back, but he should first face his fears.

Meanwhile, San Angel is attacked by the bandits who manage to kill Carlos. He meets his son in the hereafter. After he has soothed the spirits of the bulls killed by his family, he can return to the living. After driving off the bandits, Joaquín returns the talisman he received from Xibalba and María and Manolo can marry. Xibalba and La Muerte swap roles again so that everything is as before.

production

The production of Manolo and the book of life was already in discussion at Dreamworks in 2007 , the film was not made at the time due to "creative differences".
