Erling Persson (born January 21, 1917 in Borlänge ; † October 28, 2002 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish entrepreneur and founder of the textile trading company H&M .

The idea of founding a fashion house is said to have come to him on a trip to the USA after the Second World War , when he was very impressed by large fashion department stores in the USA. Back in Sweden, he founded his company in Västerås in 1947 and initially only sold clothing for women. His company was called "Hennes", the Swedish word for "she". In 1968 he then acquired “Mauritz Widforss”, a Stockholm-based hunting equipment company. The company name "Hennes & Mauritz", "H&M" resulted from the purchase.

In 1982 Persson was succeeded by his son Stefan Persson as the company's managing director, who is now chairman of the board.
