John Bauer ( pronunciation : [ ˌ ʝɔːn ˈbɑu̯əɹ ], born June 4, 1882 in Jönköping , † November 20, 1918 on Lake Vättern ) was a Swedish artist, painter and illustrator .

Life

John Bauer was born in 1882 as the son of the Bavarian butcher Joseph Bauer and his wife Emma. His father had emigrated from Bavaria to Sweden in 1863 and met his wife Emma Wadell in Jönköping.

After Bauer had applied unsuccessfully for an apprenticeship at the art academy in Stockholm in 1898 at the age of 16 - he was too young - he began an apprenticeship in Althins Målarskola , which had been founded by Caleb Althin only two years earlier . In autumn 1900, Bauer was finally accepted at the art academy. In the same year, Ester Ellquist, who six years later became Bauer's wife, began her studies at the art academy.

Even as a student, Bauer repeatedly accepted orders for illustrations. In 1907 he was commissioned to illustrate the series of fairy tales Bland Tomtar och troll ( Unter Wichteln and Trolls ). The work on this work made Bauer the most famous Swedish fairy tale illustrator. The style of his drawings was adopted by many subsequent illustrators, his characteristic representation of trolls can still be found in many fairy tale books today.

In a shipwreck in November 1918, Bauer, his wife and their three-year-old son Bengt drowned on Lake Vättersee on a trip on the canal boat Per Brahe .
