Kustpilen ( The Coastal Arrow ) is a Swedish traffic concept and the name of a train operated by Kalmar Läns Trafik between Linköping and Kalmar / Västervik . The name was first used for traffic on the Blekinge Kustbana between Karlskrona and Malmö and originally identified the Y2 diesel multiple unit train .

history

Skåne – Blekinge

The trains were first used in January 1992 on the route between Karlskrona and Malmö. The Blekinge Kustbana suffered from declining passenger numbers and was threatened with closure. After the introduction of the railcar connection, the numbers rose again significantly. The railcars were built by ABB Scandia (now Bombardier ) in Denmark and put into service under the series designation Y2. The experience of the type IC3 , which the Danish State Railways (DSB) was already using as MF , was used. The multiple unit train has a top speed of 180 km / h.

From the mid-1990s to 2004, served Kustpilen the route Hässleholm - Helsingborg and before the opening of the Öresund bridge the train via the ferry from leading Elsinore to Copenhagen . After the opening of the bridge connection, the route of the Kustpilen changed and it served the Karlskrona – Malmö – Copenhagen route across the bridge.

On June 12, 2005, the Blekinge Kustbana was closed to passenger traffic to allow the route to be electrified. This made some of the railcars superfluous, the trains were sold to the DSB and to Israel and given to Östgötatagraphs . In Skåne and Blekinge, the Kustpilen was replaced by the Öresundståg on June 15, 2004 .

Linköping – Kalmar / Västervik

Östgötatrafik and Kalmar Läns Trafik created a new transport concept for the railcars on the Stångådalsbanan . This in turn was called Kustpilen and linked Linköping and Kalmar from 1996 onwards. Some connections led to Stockholm via Nyköping . For trips that were not carried out by the Y2, the Y1 was used, which also serves the Tjustbanan . The Y1 is only used as a reserve vehicle for the Kustpilen .

The traffic to Västervik is also carried out under the name Kustpilen . New railcars of the Bombardier Itino Y31 series with the Kustpilen color scheme have been in use there since 2010 . Since June 15, 2008 the Kustpilen has been operating between Östergötland County and Kalmar County under the direction of Veolia Transport . Kalmar Läns Trafik is primarily responsible for the traffic, while Östgötatagraph is responsible for the operating costs in Östergötland.

Six Y2 and four Y31 are available for passenger train traffic.
