Helsingør [ hɛlseŋˈøːʔɐ ] ( German Helsingör ) is a city in Denmark with 47,461 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020). It is located at the narrowest point of the Oresund on the northeast tip of the island of Zealand . At the Swedish Sundufer over the city is Helsingborg .
The city is the capital of the Helsingør municipality in the administrative region of Hovedstaden . In addition to Helsingør itself, the urban area includes the districts Espergærde , Mørdrup, Skotterup, Snekkersten, Tibberup and Rørtang. A small area of the urban area with (as of January 1, 2020) 101 residents is located within the neighboring commune of Fredensborg .

Attractions
Kronborg Castle
One of the most important attractions in the region is Kronborg Castle, which gained fame as the setting for William Shakespeare's play Hamlet and has been a World Heritage Site since 2000 .
Kulturwerft and Kulturhafen
The Kulturværftet , which opened in 2010, is Helsingør's cultural center. A shipyard museum and a branch of the municipal library have been set up on the site of the former Helsingør Skibsværft . In 2012/13 the Maritime Museum (Museet for Søfart) moved here from Kronborg Castle.
After the port was redesigned, the Kronborg Cultural Harbor ( Kulturhavn Kronborg ) opened on May 26, 2013 , a joint initiative of the four institutions Kronborg Castle, Kulturværftet, the Maritime Museum Denmark and Helsingør Havn Harbor Company . The cultural events are aimed at citizens and tourists alike. The sculpture HAN by the artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset has been located in the middle of the harbor basin since 2012. The work of art alluding to the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen is popularly known as Havdreng (something like "sea boy") because, unlike the fairy tale character, it has legs.

Rail transport
Helsingør is the north-eastern corner of the railway network of the Danish State Railways . There is a terminus station here with frequent regular traffic to Copenhagen and further via the Öresund connection to Sweden. There used to be a direct rail ferry connection to Helsingborg. The private train to Gilleleje also runs along the edge of the city center , which operates within the city similar to a tram.
The depot that still exists near the station was demolished at the beginning of January 2017 to make room for the planned reconstruction of the coastline to Copenhagen, which is planned for 2017/18.
Shipping
On behalf of the Danish Crown from 1429 to 1857, a tax, the Sundzoll , was levied on non-Danish shipping traffic, which, thanks to Helsingør's location, passes the narrowest point of the Øresund , which remained the monarchy's most important source of income for centuries and whose register was as of 2011 World Document Heritage has been declared.
Helsingør Havn, the city's port, is one of the most important ports in Denmark with a cargo handling of around four million tons and its ferry port. Car ferries operated by Scandlines and HH-Ferries operate between Helsingør and Helsingborg, and they bridge this section of the E4 European route .
Helsingør is connected to the neighboring city of Helsingborg via a ferry connection. In 2018, two Forsea ferries, the Tycho Brahe and the Aurora af Helsingborg , were converted to battery-electric operation . By converting the two ferries, it was possible to reduce CO 2 emissions by 65%. The batteries are charged after each crossing; this takes about five to nine minutes.
