The Maritime Museum Denmark , in Danish M / S Museet for Søfart (literally Museum for Seafaring ), presents Danish civilian seafaring from the Middle Ages to the present day. The photo archive and library hold the largest maritime fund in Denmark. The award-winning architecture of the new exhibition building attracted a great deal of international attention in 2013.
history
It was founded in 1915 under the name of the Trade and Maritime Museum and was located at Kronborg Castle in Helsingør until the end of 2012 . Originally it was broadly devoted to maritime trade as well as fishing and the navy. After the founding of an independent fishing museum and the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, the house limited itself to the history of the Danish merchant fleet since the Middle Ages.
building
The museum is located in the harbor of Helsingør ( Helsingør Havn ), in the former Helsingør Skibsværft and today's Kulturværftet , 40 km north of Copenhagen, within sight of the world heritage site Kronborg Castle. With its underground location around a former dry dock, it initially appears invisible to the visitor.
The 150 m long and 25 m wide dry dock was made into the actual center by the architect Bjarke Ingels with a subterranean, endless gallery as an exhibition space. Crossing double-storey bridge arches connect individual sections of the museum and enable visitors to walk short distances.
The architecture magazine archdaily describes the award as “building of the year 2014”: “All levels - the connecting exhibition rooms with auditorium, lecture room, offices, cafes and the sole of the dry dock within the museum - create exciting, sculptural spaces.”
