Location Helsingør Havn

Helsingør Havn is the name of the seaport in the Danish city of Helsingør at the northern end of the Øresund . As the closest crossing point to Sweden , the ferry port gained importance early on and, with a cargo handling of 3.99 million tons (as of 2010), is one of the most important ports in Denmark. Another port of the city, the marina Helsingør Nordhavn (North Harbor), located on the north coast of the island of Zealand . Both ports are owned by Helsingør Municipality , with Helsingør Havn being a municipal self-governing port whileHelsingør Nordhavn is managed by the municipality's technical and utilities committee.

Port design

Helsingør Havn consists of three docks : Vestre Havn (west port ), Nordre Havn (north port) and Søndre Havn (south port), the entrance of which has a water depth of 7.5 m. In the south, an approximately 300 m long pier protects the harbor from the open sea. Under favorable conditions, the port can be entered by ships that are 150 m long, 30 m wide and 6.0 m deep.

The ferry port is located on the one hand in the south-west corner of the inner harbor in Søndre Havn , where the Helsingør terminus is also located, and on the other hand on the outside of the south pier with two branches of the Scandlines shipping company .

To the northeast of Kronborg Castle is the Helsingør Nordhavn marina on the side facing the Kattegat . It offers space for 1000 boats and can be navigated by ships 25 m long, 6 m wide and 3 m deep.

history

To collect the Sundzolls introduced in 1426 and to handle the ferry traffic, a few bridges in the east of the city were sufficient for several centuries. In addition, Helsingør owned a small harbor by the castle (Slotshavn) in the 16th and 17th centuries , but it silted up over time. An actual port was only built from 1764 to 1767 and expanded in the 1820s. After the Sundzoll was abolished in 1857, further expansions followed in the second half of the 19th century. In the course of this, Helsingør Skibsværft was founded in 1882 , for which docks were created near the castle's ramparts. Until it was closed in 1983, the shipyard was the city's leading industrial company for a hundred years.

From 2008, the port in the northwest was redesigned and modernized for over a billion crowns . As part of the Kulturhavn Kronborg project , the defenses of the castle were exposed and a new building for the Maritime Museum of Denmark was opened at the port in 2013 . It is housed in the dry dock of the old shipyard, which serves the town as Kulturværftet (Culture Shipyard ).

Ferry traffic

Between 1890 and 1892 a train station and a pier for steamers were built. In March 1892 the paddle steamer Kronprinsesse Louise was used for the first time, ushering in the era of the Danish railway company Danske Statsbaner on the route between Helsingør and Helsingborg . In 1955 its monopoly was broken by the car ferry connection - the LB Færgerne - of the Swedish shipping company Linjebuss , for which a separate pier with a terminal was set up on the north pier. Another competitor was the Norwegian shipowner Ragnar Moltzau, who operated the crossing under the name Sundbusserne A / S with two passenger ferries. For this purpose, too, a new terminal was built on the south pier in 1981.

In the 1970s and 1980s, ferries to Helsingborg, Sweden drove almost every five minutes, which is why larger ferries were required, especially for heavy haulage . Because of this and in order to relieve the inner city of through traffic, a new ferry port was opened in 1991 on the outside of the south pier. At the same time, a new terminal was completed in the inner harbor and across from the train station, from which four Sundbusserne ferries left . From 1996, the Danish shipping company Mercandia provided further ferries , whose ships were later transferred to the shipping company HH-Ferries .

With the construction of a port on the north coast proposed in 1866, Helsingør was originally intended to form a hub for Russian exports and the planned north port to be connected to the state port via a canal. Because the funds could not be raised, the plans were initially discarded and only resumed in the years 1909–1924. The new designs envisaged a north port that would have been three times the size of today's Nordhavn. But they met with strong criticism from the population, who saw Kronborg's importance for the cityscape diminished. Today's Helsingør Nordhavn was finally created as a fishing and yachting harbor in 1932–1934 and expanded to its present size in the 1970s.
