Carl Gustav Boberg (born August 16, 1859 in Mönsterås ; died January 7, 1940 in Kalmar ) was a Swedish poet , preacher , editor and politician . He became known through the poem O Store Gud (German: O great God ), from which the hymn How Great Thou Art was derived.

Live and act

Carl Boberg was born in Mönsterås parish in 1859. His parents were the carpenter Nils Petter Jonsson Boberg and Hedvig Gustava Jonsdotter. In 1875 he was hired on a merchant ship and worked in the trade for some time. He then attended a craft school course and from 1877 worked for two years as a craft teacher at an elementary school. From 1879 to 1882 he studied at the mission school in Kristinehamn and then worked as pastor of the mission church ; first in Mönsterås, then in Stockholm on the Florakyrkan (1890-1892) and the Immanuelkyrkan (1892-1909). From 1897 to 1902 he was a board member of the Swedish Mission Union. Boberg was the publisher of the weekly Christian newspaper Sanningsvittnet (German: Witness of Truth ) from 1889 to 1916 and became its owner in 1894.

Within the free church leadership, Boberg took a conservative stance, both politically and spiritually. During his pastoral ministry he worked with theologian and leading free church leader Paul Petter Waldenström , went on preaching tours across the country and was one of the keynote speakers at the major summer spiritual meetings in various provinces.

Boberg wrote numerous poems, ( gospel ) songs and hymns. He and Lina Sandell contributed many hymns to the first covenant hymnbook. Many of his poems were set to music, including O Store Gud , which is sung in all parts of the world today.

From 1912 to 1931 Boberg was a member of the First Chamber of the Reichstag and was active there on various committees.

Boberg was married twice and died in Kalmar at the age of 80.
