Sara Lidman
Sara Lidman (born December 30, 1923 in Missenträsk , † June 17, 2004 in Umeå ) was a Swedish writer .
Life
Lidman achieved her first major success in 1953 with her novel "Tjärdalen" ( The Tar Valley ). In it and in the three following novels, the author describes with great pathos the harsh living conditions of poor farmers in the interior of the northern Swedish province of Västerbotten in the 19th century .
Their innovative use of language is strongly influenced by dialectal influences and the language of the Bible .
Following the first four novels, Sara Lidman wrote a number of texts with strong political content. She was involved in the protest against the Vietnam War , against the South African apartheid regime and for the strike of the miners in northern Sweden and influenced public opinion in a decisive way. From 1977 five novels appeared in which the colonization of northern Sweden through the construction of the railway found its literary form. These five novels are also known in the English translation as the "Railway Suite" and include the books Din Tjänare Hör, Vredens Barn, Nabots Sten, Den Undbaren Mannen and Järnkronan. The later titles Lifsen's Rot and Oskuldens Minut are also railway novels, but do not constitute a continuation of the series of novels from 1977 to 1985.
