The Nyfors – Piteå railway (formerly Älvsbyn – Piteå) is a Swedish railway line between Nyfors and Piteå in Norrbotten County . It has a length of 54 kilometers. The standard gauge line is single-lane throughout. The route is owned by the Swedish state . The route is operated by Green Cargo .

history

The line was built between 1912 and 1915. On December 17, 1914, the provisional passenger traffic between Älvsbyn and Piteå was started, on December 22nd, the provisional freight traffic took place . The official opening took place on October 1, 1915. On June 16, 1995, electrification went into operation.

Operation today

In the spring of 1995, the Älvsbyn – Piteå line was electrified and a new connection to Södra stambana was established via a newly built triangle of tracks . This connection and the associated new start of the route is part of Nyfors station. The rationalization of freight traffic was continued, including the expansion to an axle load of 25 tons, the line was equipped with remote control and ATC . Electrification continued between Piteå and Svedjan in 2004.

Since May 29, 1972 there has been no more passenger traffic on the route. Around a dozen pairs of freight trains run every day. Most of these are trains for the forestry and timber industry. Most trains run on Green Cargo Rc4 locomotives . Type T44 diesel locomotives also run .
