Nils Strömcrona

Nils Thorvedsson Strömcrona (before 1727 Ström; * 1664 in Marstrand , † January 24, 1740 in Karlskrona ) was a Swedish marine, pilot , cartographer , graphic artist and caricaturist.

He was the son of Deputy Mayor Thorved Nilsson Ström and Margareta Mattsdotter. Strömcrona first became a student in Copenhagen and then in Lund. In 1691 he was appointed teacher of geometry and astronomy at the Admiralty in Karlskrona and in 1696 as lieutenant and in 1697 as captain and pilot. In the same year he married Lovisa Christina Ankarstierna.

He took part in the landing at Humlebæk in 1700 , which he then documented on engravings . After the peace with Denmark in the same year, Ström brought the Swedish fleet around Amager from previously unknown waters . In 1704 he founded a pilot service and later organized the pilotage in the Gulf of Finland . By mapping the Swedish coasts and carrying out pilots in the coastal waters and the publication of good maps, as well as a hydrographic map of the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat, he made a contribution to the Swedish maritime transport services. In addition to maps, he also painted paintings by, among others, Karl XII. , Architectural motifs and figures. He was appointed commander in 1717 and ennobled with the name Strömcrona in 1727 .

Honors

In 1985, the Swedish authorities notified Sjöfartsverket with "Nils Strömcrona" a house built as a catamaran survey ship after him.
