The Nils Strömcrona is a former survey ship built as a catamaran by the Swedish authority Sjöfartsverket .

history

The ship was built in 1985 under the construction number 501 on the Oskarshamns Varv in Oskarshamn for the Swedish authority Sjöfartsverket. The construction contract was signed in August 1983. The ship was christened on May 31, 1985 and delivered on June 28. The construction costs amounted to around SEK 27 million . The ship was primarily used by Sjöfartsverket for surveying work.

In 2011 the ship was decommissioned by Sjöfartsverket and sold at the end of 2011. The ship, operated under the Swedish flag , was named after the Swedish hydrograph and pilot Nils Strömcrona .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is built as a catamaran. The design as a catamaran was due in particular to reasons of stability, since the ship had to be built very compactly in order to be able to use it in narrow fairways . The ship is powered by four Scania - diesel engines each with 318  kW power driven. There are two engines in each engine room , each housed in one of the hulls . The motors act on a variable pitch propeller via reduction gears . The ship is equipped with a hydraulically extendable cross-thruster control system in the bow and stern area. The cross-thruster control systems are driven by the main engines. Two Hitzinger generators, each driven by Scania diesel engines, with an apparent power of 118 kVA each  are available for power generation. Storage rooms and tanks are located in the hulls in front of the engine rooms.

Ten cabins are available on board, two single and eight double cabins, which are spread over two decks. There are also showers and toilets on the decks for which there was no space in the cabins. Furthermore are u. a. a mess , a lounge and a galley as well as other storage rooms on board. Sjöfartsverket operated the ship with a crew of eleven . Five officers were accommodated in single cabins on the boat deck and six seamen in double cabins on the main deck.

A crane that can lift up to 14 t is available on the foredeck.

Whereabouts of the ship

The ship was bought in late 2011 by the British company Atlantic Marine, which brought it under the flag of Belize and renamed it Atlantic Cougar . Atlantic Marine uses the ship as a supply and safety ship for the construction of offshore wind farms and for the transfer of personnel. For this purpose, the ship was retrofitted with a platform at the bow, which makes it easier to approach offshore structures and climb over personnel.

In November 2014 the Hamburg company Opus Marine bought the ship. The ship now operating under the Panamanian flag was named Magnificat . The ship will continue to be used by Opus Marine as a supply and security ship in the area of offshore facilities.
