Stephen Ames (born April 28, 1964 in San Fernando , Trinidad and Tobago ) is a professional golfer of the North American PGA TOUR Champions , who has both Canadian and Trinidadian citizenship from birth.

Career

Ames became a professional golfer in 1987 , but was initially unable to qualify for the PGA TOUR , not least because of a neck injury. He turned to the runner-up Ben Hogan Tour , where he won his first tournament in 1991.

In the autumn of 1992, Ames obtained the right to play the European Tour through the Tour School , on which he was successful for five seasons. He recorded two tournament victories and achieved his best place in the money list with 13th place in 1996.

At the end of 1997, Ames managed to qualify for the PGA TOUR as third of the Q-School and played six seasons consistently, but without a tournament win. In July 2004 he made the breakthrough and got his first title, the Western Open , leaving a world class field with Tiger Woods , Vijay Singh and Davis Love III behind. Winning the highest endowed Players Championship in 2006 with a record lead of six strokes finally helped him to rise to the world elite. His career prize money exceeded the $ 10 million mark and Ames is among the top 50 in the world golf rankings . As a caddy , he has his brother by his side.

Stephen Ames is married to his wife, Jodi, a former stewardess . Because of her, he became a Canadian citizen in 2004 and now lives in Calgary .
