Brtonigla (Italian Verteneglio ) is a village and a municipality in the Istria County , Croatia .

According to the 2011 census, the municipality of Brtonigla has 1,626 inhabitants, of whom 815 are male and 811 are female.

By ethnicity, 44.8% of the population of the municipality were Croatians , 30.1% Italians , 2.4% Slovenes , 1.8% Serbs , 1.2% Bosniaks and 1.4% others. 14.1% of the inhabitants called themselves Istrians or stated another regional affiliation and 2.0% stated a religion for this question. For the remaining 2.0%, the ethnicity was not given or was unknown. By citizenship, 94.2% were Croatians (of which 19.4% had dual citizenship) and 5.8% were foreigners.

56.0% used Serbo-Croatian as their mother tongue , with 54.0% describing the language as Croatian , 0.7% as Bosnian , 0.6% as Serbian and 0.6% as Serbo-Croatian. 39.8% named Italian as their mother tongue, 2.3% Slovenian and 1.3% said another language. The mother tongue of the remaining 0.6% of the population was unknown. The official languages ​​of the municipality are Croatian and Italian.

According to religion, 85.7% of the population were Catholics , 2.6% Orthodox , 1% Muslim , 0.3% belonged to another denomination or religion. 4.1% were non-denominational , no information is available on the remaining 4.3%.

history

In 1947 the municipality became part of Zone B of the Free Territory of Trieste , which was under Yugoslav administration.
