Vižinada ( Italian Visinada ) is a village and a municipality in the Istria County , Croatia .

history

Already in antiquity there was the settlement of Ružar below today's Vižinada in the Mirna valley , which was probably inhabited until the 15th century before its inhabitants settled in Vižinada . Vižinada itself is mentioned for the first time in 1177 in a document from the Bishop of Poreč . However, it was founded several decades ago.

Vižinada fell under the rule of the Venetians in 1523 and was ruled and administered by the Grimani family until the fall of the Venetian Empire towards the end of the 18th century.

In the 11th century a church was built for the first time on the Božje field west of Vižinada, today's cemetery. In 1119 the Templars founded a monastery there. Until the violent dissolution of the Knights Templar at the beginning of the 14th century, the monastery was the center of the Knights Templar in Istria. After that the monastery was taken over by the Order of Malta and in 1526 by the Franciscans of the Third Order. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary that still exists today dates from around the 15th century. In the painting of the ceiling in the chancel, as well as the larger part of the walls, evangelist symbols, angels and the apostles are shown. On the facade above the church gate there is a stone head that is said to represent Attila , King of the Huns.

The town center is characterized by the St. Jerome Church (Župna crkva Sv. Jeronima) from the 16th century, which was rebuilt in 1837, and the 25-meter-high, free-standing bell tower built in the 17th century. On the high altar are two marble statues of St. Jerome and St. Barnabas . The image of Mary behind the altar was made by Zorzi Ventura .

In the western part of the village is the Church of St. Barnaba (Crkva Sv. Barnabe), a sacred building from the 13th century with frescoes from the middle of the 15th century. These were plastered over at the beginning of the 18th century and only exposed during restoration work a few decades ago.

In the eastern part of the village stands the Church of St. John (Crkva Sv. Ivana Kritelja), built in 1579 (and not, as noted at the gate, in 1593).

The Church of Saint Roch (Crkva Sv. Roka), built in 1593 and restored in 1989, stands on the former railway line of the Parenza Railway .
