The Haller Mauern (usually “Hallermauern” in alpine literature) are a small mountain range in the Austrian part of the Northern Limestone Alps . They take their name from the small town of Hall , which is 3 km north of Admont . Their rugged limestone walls form the north-western end of the Ennstal Alps . Although the Haller Walls form an independent mountain range, they are often counted among the Gesäuse mountains .
Topography and neighboring mountains
The border between the federal states of Upper Austria and Styria is located in the western ridge of the Haller Walls . The Haller Mauern have their highest elevation in the Großer Pyhrgas ( 2244 m ). The mountain range runs from west to east in a slight curve to the north. In the north, the road borders the Haller Walls over the 985 m high Hengstpass and through the Laussabach valley . This street connects the places Windischgarsten and Altenmarkt near Sankt Gallen and separates the Haller Walls from the Sengsengebirge and the Reichraminger Hintergebirge . In the east, the 861 m high Buchauer Sattel separates the Hall walls from the northern Gesäuse mountains. The Buchauer Sattel connects St. Gallen with the Admont market. In the south, the wide Admont valley basin through which the Enns flows offers a stark contrast to the steep limestone walls of the Haller Walls. The Eisenerzer Alps , which also belong to the Ennstal Alps, rise south of the Enns . The Pyhrn Pass ( 954 m ) borders the Haller Mauern in the west, under whose westernmost summit, the Bosruck ( 1992 m ), the summit tunnel of the Pyhrn Autobahn runs. Beyond the Pyhrn Pass, which connects Liezen with Windischgarsten, is the Warscheneck group , the eastern foothills of the Dead Mountains .

Valley locations
The market town of Windischgarsten is to the northwest of the Haller Walls. To the east a road leads over the Hengstpass into the valley of the Laussabach. In Altenmarkt the road branches off to Sankt Gallen with a late Gothic parish church and the ruins of Gallenstein, a former refuge for the Admont abbots. The road leads over the Buchauer Sattel to Admont with an old town center that developed before the Benedictine abbey , the cultural and spiritual center of the valley, with the baroque abbey library, a grammar school and a rich museum.
A few kilometers to the west, the pilgrimage church Frauenberg an der Enns dominates the valley, with a view of the Haller Walls and the western Gesäuse Mountains. Spital am Pyhrn on the north ramp of the Pyhrnpassstraße is the starting point for a funicular to the Wurzeralm and a hike to the Dr.-Vogelgesang-Klamm .
