The Große Pyhrgas is a striking mountain in the Ennstal Alps on the border between Upper Austria and Styria . With a height of 2244  m above sea level. A. it is the highest peak and western pillar of the Haller Walls .

geography

The spacious summit region of the Großer Pyhrgas offers a comprehensive panorama with impressive views of the Gesäuse peaks, the Dead Mountains and the Dachstein massif . In particularly favorable conditions, the view extends as far as the Mühlviertel north of the Danube and the Glockner group in the Hohe Tauern .

There are three mountain huts on the Upper Austrian side of the Großer Pyhrgas: the Hofalmhütte ( 1305  m ), the Rohrauer Haus ( 1308  m ) and the Bosruckhütte ( 1036  m ).

Origin of name

In Celtic, Pyr stands for 'mountain', which may indicate Celtic origin, but a Slavic origin of the mountain name is also conceivable, because prěgazb means 'transition' in the South Slavic family of languages.

Climbs

There are three marked climbs on the Großer Pyhrgas.

  • The easiest way is over the west ridge . It begins just south of the Hofalmhütte and (because of the high alpine terrain) only requires sufficient surefootedness.
  • The Hofersteig begins at Pyhrgasgatterl near the Rohrauerhaus and leads through the steep southern flank of the Großer Pyhrgas. Before reaching the western ridge, it has simple insured sections (maximum difficulty: AB) as well as unsecured rock steps ( difficulty level 1-) in the steep, rock-interspersed Schrofen terrain .
  • The Bad-Haller-Steig from the Gowilalm north of the Großer Pyhrgas first crosses the steep western flank of the Kleiner Pyhrgas and then leads into the extensive debris- covered Holzerkar . After climbing over the rocky eastern flank of the Great Pyhrgas, the climb reaches the north ridge, which ends directly at the summit. This route also has several easy insured sections.

The Hofersteig is most often used on the ascent and the western ridge on the descent.

  • The connecting ridge from the Kleiner Pyhrgas to the Großer Pyhrgas has several points in the 2nd degree of difficulty and therefore requires climbing knowledge and experience in exposed rocky terrain.
