After he had first been used with the Binghamton Whalers and the Springfield Indians , two farm teams in the AHL , the left shooter completed his first NHL appearances for the Whalers in the 1990/91 season . In this season he also achieved the franchise goal record of the Springfield Indians with 56 AHL goals , with which he also won the Calder Cup , the championship of the American Hockey League.

In the NHL, however, Picard never made his breakthrough, other stations in addition to the Hartford Whalers were the San Jose Sharks , the Ottawa Senators , the St. Louis Blues , the Edmonton Oilers and the Philadelphia Flyers . Only in the 1998/99 season he was there for an NHL team, the St. Louis Blues, during the NHL play-offs on the ice. For the 2001/02 season , the Canadian signed a contract with German champions Adler Mannheim , with whom he was able to win the runner-up in the first season, but then moved back to North America to the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. From the 2004/05 season, Michel Picard played with the Prolab de Thetford Mines in the Canadian minor league LNAH, whose scorers list he led in each of his first three seasons, in 2007 also the league-wide scorer list. After the 2008/09 season, the Canadian finally ended his active career and then worked as a scout in the organization of the St. Louis Blues.
