John "Johnny" Pohl (born June 29, 1979 in Rochester , Minnesota ) is a former American ice hockey striker who was last active for the Chicago Wolves in the American Hockey League .

Career

Pohl grew up in Red Wing and was considered one of the outstanding players during his time at Red Wing High School . In 1998, after scoring 107 points in 28 games, he was named Minnesota Mr. Hockey , an annual award given to the best high school ice hockey player in Minnesota. In the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , Pohl was selected in the ninth round and a total of 255th position by the St. Louis Blues . He then played first for the University of Minnesota . The highlight was winning the national championship of the NCAA in 2002, when Pohl in the final of the Frozen Four tournament against the University of Maine , after he had already scored 2-1 in the meantime, both shortly before the end of the game to equalize and gave an assist in overtime to the winning goal. In four years at the University of Minnesota, Pohl scored a total of 200 points (71 goals and 129 assists).

In the 2002/03 season Pohl made his debut as a professional ice hockey player with the Worcester IceCats in the American Hockey League . In 58 games he scored 26 goals and gave 32 assists. In 2003 he was appointed to the United States national team for the World Cup . In six games he scored seven points, but the US national team was below average with 13th place. In the 2003/04 season Pohl completed his first game in the NHL for the Blues. However, he could not prevail in the team and continued to play for the Worcester IceCats in the AHL. After the lockout - 2004/05 Pohl was on 24 August 2005 by the St. Louis Blues to the Toronto Maple Leafs transferred. After he was used in the 2005/06 season in seven games in the NHL and mainly in the farm team , the Toronto Marlies was used, he made the breakthrough the following year. For the 2008/09 season he moved to HC Lugano . After he could not meet the expectations, his contract was terminated in January 2009. In 22 games for the Swiss he scored 3 goals and gave 22 assists. He then signed a contract with Frölunda HC in Sweden.

A few months later he returned to North America and joined the Chicago Wolves, who were active in the American Hockey League . Pohl managed to get into the play-offs with the team , in which the team lost in the division finals in seven games against the Texas Stars and was eliminated from the competition. In August 2010 he ended his active career as a professional.

Pohl is married to Krissy Wendell , a player on the US women's ice hockey team.
