The county seat is Bolivar , named after Simón Bolívar , a South American independence fighter and national hero of many South American countries.

Polk County was formed on January 5, 1835 from parts of Greene County. It was first named after Ezekiel Polk (1747-1824), a colonel in the American War of Independence .

It was later renamed in honor of James K. Polk (1795–1849), the eleventh President of the United States (1845–1849).

Four buildings in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 6, 2018).

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Polk County had 31,137 people in 11,718 households. The population density was 18.9 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.48 people lived in the 11,718 households.

The racial the population was composed of 96.5 percent white, 1.0 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.1 percent of the population.
