Ellis County is a county in the US state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Hays .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of ​​2,332 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Rooks County , Osborne County , Russell County , Rush County , Ness County, and Trego Counties .

history

Ellis County was formed as the original Free Territory County on February 26, 1867. It was named after George Ellis, an American Civil War officer who died at the Battle of Jenkins Ferry .

As of the 2000 census , Ellis County had 27,507 people in 11,193 households and 6,771 families in Ellis County. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
