Barton County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Great Bend .

The county is located near the geographic center of Kansas and covers an area of ​​2332 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Russell County , Ellsworth County , Rice County , Stafford County , Pawnee County, and Rush County .

history

Barton County was formed on February 26, 1867 from parts of Marion County. It was named after Clara Barton , an American nurse, teacher, and philanthropist . She founded the American Red Cross and also had a great influence on the self-image of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement .

A total of 18 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Barton County had 28,205 people in 11,393 households and 7,530 families in Barton County. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.98 percent white, 1.15 percent African American, 0.51 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.6 percent were descended from 2 or more races. 8.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
