Kiowa County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is Greensburg . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in southern Kansas, about 45 km from Oklahoma , and covers an area of 1,872 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Edwards Counties , Pratt Counties , Barber Counties , Comanche Counties , Clark Counties , and Ford Counties .
history
Kiowa County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after the Kiowa Indian tribe . On May 4, 2007, Greensburg was largely destroyed by a tornado. According to initial information, 9 people were killed in the tornado, and a good 95% of the population became homeless. The tornado responsible for the devastation of the city is classified in the strength category EF6 and belongs to the May 2007 tornado outbreak with a total of over 133 individual events.

According to the 2000 census , Kiowa County had 3,278 people in 1,365 households and 924 families in Kiowa County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.19 percent white, 0.21 percent African American, 0.61 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian and 0.98 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.04 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,365 households, 27.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 5.3 percent were single mothers, and 32.3 percent were non-families. 30.5 percent of all households were single households and 15.5 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
24.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 21.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age, and 21.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 96.3 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 95.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 31,576 , and the median income for a family was $ 40,950. Males had a median income of $ 29,063 versus $ 20,764 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,207.
