Liberal is a city in Seward County in the US state of Kansas . It has 19,666 inhabitants (as of 2000) and is 864 meters above sea level.

From 1882 the first settlers settled in the area of ​​the later Liberal. In 1885 the first department store was opened, which was followed by a post office in the same year and the place got its current name. After Seward County was opened up by the railroad in the following years, interest in settling in this region also grew. By 1888 the place already had about 800 inhabitants. At that time, Liberal was predominantly agricultural. Natural gas was discovered west of the city in 1920, and oil in the southwest in 1951 .

There is a museum with a collection of various military and civil aircraft. Another attraction is the Samson Bridge , which was built in 1939 to cross the Cimarron River by railroad.

The Seward County Community College is also located in Liberal .
