history

After Kansas became a US state in 1861, there was a wave of settlements from the 1870s to the 1890s in which Mennonites from Prussia and Russia mainly settled in the area of today's Newton .

Between 1867 and 1871, the Chisholm Trail , over which more than a million cattle were herded, ran through what is now North Newton.

In 1887, Pastor David Goerz founded Bethel College in an open field north of Newton. Over time, a predominantly Mennonite community developed around the oldest Mennonite college in the USA. It was not until 1938 that North Newton officially became a city because access to funding from the New Deal was only possible with city rights. Originally they wanted to name the city after the College Bethel, but there was already a place of the same name in Kansas at that time.

North Newton and the greater Newton are directly adjacent to each other, but each has its own administration, police and zip code.
