Russell County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Russell .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Kansas and has an area of ​​2328 square kilometers, of which 37 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Osborne County , Lincoln County , Ellsworth County , Barton County , Rush County, and Ellis County .

Russell County was formed on February 26, 1867. It was named after Alva P. Russell , an officer in the American Civil War .

Russell County's population was 7,370 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 209 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3207 households and 2020 families in Russell County.
