Detroit is a city in Red River County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

The city is located in the west of the county, in northeast Texas, is about 15 km to the north from Oklahoma and has a total area of ​​4.1 km² without any significant water surface.

history

When the Texas and Pacific Railway was completed in the area, the city was incorporated as Bennett in 1876 . In 1887 it was renamed Detroit by JM Stephens, the local railroad agent , after his hometown in Michigan . Due to the favorable location on the railway line, the place quickly developed into a trading and freight center for this area.

According to the 2000 census, 776 people in 315 households and 217 families lived here. The population density was 189.6 inhabitants per km ².
