Jonathan Simon Woodgate (born January 22, 1980 in Middlesbrough ) is a former English football player who was last active in the Premier League for Middlesbrough FC . In his style of play he was characterized by an above-average header game and a technique that was comparatively good for a central defender . During his career, however, Woodgate was plagued by serious injuries several times. He ended his career after the 2015/16 season. Since April 2017 he has been part of the coaching team at Middlesbrough FC, and in 2019 he was promoted to head coach.

Club career

Leeds United

The defender began his career in the youth department of Middlesbrough FC before joining Leeds United at the age of 16 following disagreements between the club and family over his future . There he performed well, won the FA Youth Cup in 1997 and made his debut in November of the following year for the first team supervised by David O'Leary . Initially, Woodgate, who has meanwhile been promoted to captain of the English U-18 team, acted in defensive midfield (a role that was otherwise mostly reserved for David Batty ), but then developed into a central part of the Leeds defense line and especially after the commitment of Rio Ferdinand in November 2000 this new “pair of central defenders” was already seen by experts as the basis for the future national team defense.

Despite his footballing skills, Woodgate, who is often temperamental, had previously deprived himself of his athletic perspective. In January 2000, he and his teammate Lee Bowyer were significantly involved in a brawl outside the Majestyks nightspot in Leeds, in which an Asian student was seriously injured. After the first trial in April 2001 came to an early end, Woodgate was sentenced to 100 hours of community service in a second trial that lasted until December 2001 and reduced his ability to serve on the team - in the case of Lee Bowyer, the charges ended with one Acquittal.

Newcastle United

In January 2003 Woodgate moved to Newcastle United for a fee of nine million pounds . There he quickly developed into a crowd favorite, but then got seriously injured at the beginning of the 2003/04 season . The highlight of this season was to be his performance in the UEFA Cup semi -final first leg when he won the direct duel against Didier Drogba .

real Madrid

In the summer of 2004, Real Madrid signed Woodgate for £ 13.4m. This personnel decision of the Spanish club was received with some amazement in the professional world, especially since Woodgate had previously struggled with injury problems. In his first season at Real Madrid he couldn't play a single competitive game for the Madrid team due to an injury and had to struggle with injuries again and again in the 2005/06 season. In addition, his debut in the Spanish league on September 22, 2005 against Athletic Bilbao was under a bad star and after an own goal Woodgate was sent off with a yellow and red card.

After his first goal for Real in the 4-1 win against Rosenborg Trondheim in the Champions League on October 19, 2005, Woodgate's prospects improved continuously and by February 2006 he developed more and more into a regular at the side of changing partners such as Sergio Ramos , Iván Helguera , Francisco Pavón and Álvaro Mejía and became more and more a leading player. However, further setbacks in terms of physical fitness were the cause of the fact that he was loaned by Real Madrid to home club Middlesbrough for the 2006/07 season. Competitor alongside the club from his hometown was Newcastle United; the management of Liverpool FC, however, denied an alleged interest in a commitment from Woodgate.

The English central defender was not supposed to return to Madrid afterwards, where he was subsequently certified by readers' poll in the Spanish sports newspaper “ Marca ” to have been the “biggest bad buy of the 21st century” - with 37.11% of the votes “won “Woodgate by a long way.

Middlesbrough FC

On September 9, 2006, Woodgate completed his first game for Middlesbrough FC against Arsenal FC at the Emirates Stadium and was able to convince with a good performance. In his second game he was given the role of team captain , as George Boateng was suspended as captain. In a very mediocre season for Middlesbrough FC, which brought no risk of relegation, but also left the top half of the table out of reach, Woodgate was ultimately one of the top performers.

On April 26, 2007, the club announced that Woodgate should move permanently to Middlesbrough FC for a transfer fee of seven million pounds and could be tied with a four-year contract until 2011.

Tottenham Hotspur

On January 29, 2008 it was announced that Woodgate is moving to league rivals Tottenham Hotspur with immediate effect .

Stoke City

On July 11, 2011, Jonathan Woodgate moved to Stoke City .

Career in the national team

Woodgate was called up to the England team for the first time during his time at Leeds United - only afterwards did he make his debut for England's U-21s. He played his first game under the then coach Kevin Keegan on June 9, 1999 against Bulgaria , making him the first player born in the 1980s to play a full international match for the English national team. However, the promising career suffered a sustained setback due to the injury problems, but above all because of the controversy surrounding his violent outbreak.

The English football association " Football Association " banned Woodgate from further international appearances, so that after his debut he could not play another selection game and thus missed a possible participation in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea .

Only after the final tournament came Woodgate again between September and October 2002 to three internationals, which was followed by another 1½-year break until another game against Sweden on March 31, 2004. The ongoing injury problems then hampered his national team career and the possible remaining chance of being nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany stood in the way of another operation.

On February 7, 2007 he made his comeback in the national team after almost three years in the game against Spain .
