The Jeff Davis County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Fort Davis .

geography

The county is located in western Texas and borders Mexico on the western tip . It has an area of ​​5865 square kilometers, without any significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Reeves County , Pecos County , Brewster County , Presidio County, and Culberson County .

history

Jeff Davis County was formed on March 15, 1887 from parts of Presidio County. It was named after Jefferson Davis , the only President of the Confederate States of America .

Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of November 24, 2019, with the Fort Davis National Historic Site being a National Historic Landmark .

According to the 2000 census , Jeff Davis County had 2,207 people in 896 households and 632 families. The population density was 0.4 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.5 percent white, 0.9 percent African American, 0.3 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian and 5.2 percent from other ethnic groups; 3.0 percent were descended from two or more races. 35.5 percent of the population were of Hispanic or Latino American descent.

Of the 896 households, 27.3 percent had children or young people living with them. 60.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.9 percent were single mothers, and 29.4 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 5.3 percent between 18 and 24, 24.1 percent between 25 and 44, 30.0 percent between 45 and 64, and 16.3 percent were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 104.5 males and for every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 104.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,212 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,083. Males had a median income of $ 27,011 versus $ 21,384 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,846. 14.1 percent of families and 15.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
