Fort Davis is a census-designated place and the county seat of Jeff Davis County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The place has 1050 inhabitants (as of 2000).
geography
The city is located in the Chihuahua Desert on the edge of the Davis Mountains and emerged from Fort Davis , which was built in 1854 , a military base on the old military and trade route from El Paso to San Antonio . Today Texas State Routes 17 and 118 intersect in Fort Davis .

The first settlement at the fort was called Chihuahua. She and the fort were, as in the American Civil War , the troops were withdrawn from Apaches attacked and plundered. Until 1867, the fort was rebuilt and the 9th Cavalry - Regiment , a retired: Buffalo Soldiers , a unit of African-Americans , by the Indians "Bison soldiers" were known for their curly black hair as well. Around the base a new settlement was built that bore the name of the fort and quickly became the largest town in Texas west of the Pecos River .
In 1871 Fort Davis became the county seat of the newly established Presidio County , in 1885 this function was relocated to Marfa , which is located to the south , because the railroad now passed there. Just two years later, Jeff Davis County was split off from Presidio County and Fort Davis was again the county seat of the re-establishment. In the early 1890s, the army abandoned the fort and Fort Davis lost both residents and importance.
In 1966, the former base as was Fort Davis National Historic Site , a memorial of the type of National Historic Sites furnished. In addition, the Greek Revival- style courthouse and two other historic buildings in the city are on the national monument protection list. The Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute created a botanical garden with desert vegetation on the edge of the place.
Economy and tourism
Today the place lives from tourism. The historic fort, botanical garden, Davis Mountains, and Davis Mountains State Park attract visitors. The McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas on the Mount Locke creates a few highly skilled jobs and is also open to visitors. The Overland Trail Museum shows the history of the place in the pioneering days.
