The Davis Mountains are a mountain range in western Texas , United States , near the town of Fort Davis , after which they are named. Large parts of the mountains are designated as Davis Mountains State Park . The state park and the mountains are popular places for camping, hunting, and hiking. The only permanent accommodation is the Indian Lodge .
Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the American environmental protection organization Nature Conservancy acquired 130 km² of land, along with property rights for a further 136.9 km². This area is open to the public at certain times.
The McDonald Observatory of the University of Texas is at Mount Locke .
