Base of the Antoninus Pius column

The base is made of marble and was created by the artist Heraklides. The column shaft was made of red granite . A quarry inscription shows that it was made as early as 106 AD. The deification ( apotheosis ) of the emperor and his wife Faustina is depicted on the front of the pedestal . They are carried to heaven by the winged genius Aion . On the opposite side there is an inscription with a dedication.

Antoninus Pius column on consecration sesterce, minted under Marcus Aurelius

The base was found in the Piazza Montecitorio in 1703. Until then, the column was known only from a sesterce , which Marcus Aurelius had minted on the occasion of the erection of the column and which had the portrait of Antoninus Pius with the inscription DIVUS ANTONINVS on the front , the column with the statue of Antoninus and the inscription DIVO PIO on the back shows. The column of Antoninus Pius itself had been sawed up to be used in the restoration of the meridian for the nearby Augusti solarium . Only the upper part was left. The base of the Antoninus Pius column is now on display in the Vatican Museums . The Mark Aurel Column is located just to the east of where the base was found .
