The Compagnie Financière Belge des Pétroles, société anonyme , abbreviated to Petrofina (= stock corporation ), was founded on February 25, 1920 with its headquarters in Anvers (= Antwerp) by a group of investors from Antwerp , originally to control the German oil companies after the First World War .

The mineral oil company was active in all areas of the oil industry and also had its own refineries . In Europe, America and Africa the products were sold under the brand name " Fina ". Albert Frère (* 1926) became one of the company's most important shareholders .

In 1980 the company operated 792 Fina petrol stations in West Germany, 319 of which were self-service.

In 1999 Petrofina merged with its French competitor Total to form Totalfina. A year later, in 2000, it merged with the French Elf Aquitaine to form TotalFinaElf. This name was given up in 2003 in favor of Total. Albert Frère was one of the most important shareholders even after the merger of the three groups.
