history

Early years

Eskimo Joe was founded in Fremantle in 1997 . Kavyen Temperley (bass, vocals), Joel Quartermain and Stuart MacLeod (both guitar ) took part in the Australian National Campus Band Competition as a band . Temperley and Quartermain were at the same time members of the band Freud's Pillow , which also included Simon Leach, the current guitarist of Little Birdy , and his brother Stuart Leach. Although the band first appeared together at the competition, Eskimo Joe won the event. The prizes were an appearance at the Livid Festival and a session in the recording studio.

There they produced the EP Sweater in April 1998 , whose title song of the same name made it into the Top 100 on the radio station Triple J. A year later, the EP Eskimo Joe appeared with the successful songs Ruby Wednesday and Turn Up Your Stereo . The band gained its reputation a. a. at the Homebake Festival .

Album releases

The EMI subsidiary Modular Records signed the band in 1999. It was produced by Ed Buller, who had previously worked with Ben Lee, Pulp and Suede. The debut album Girl entered the Australian charts at number 40 and reached gold in 2001 with titles such as Planet Earth and Who Sold Her Out . Some of the titles were featured on The Secret Life Of Us television program . With the release of the album, the band's popularity increased significantly. The keyboard and another guitar were added during live performances .

Despite the success, the production company separated from the band. The artists signed a new contract with Festival Mushroom Records in 2002 and produced their second album with Paul McKercher and Nick Launay . A Song Is A City was released on May 16, 2004 at number 2 on the ARIA Album Charts and went platinum . On the production company's website, Kavyen Temperley named the city of Fremantle as the subject of this album.

The whole album is really about me, my friends, the people I love and Fremantle. It's the stories that go on between us. It's similar to the people in every place all over the world. For me, that's what I'm writing about. I'm definitely not writing about New York. I'm writing about Fremantle.
