Archie Roach (born January 8, 1956 in Mooroopna , Victoria ) is a singer and songwriter from Australia , who deals in his songs with the real life and dream time of the Aborigines .

Life

Archie Roach lived on the Framlingham Aboriginal Mission, which is near Warrnambool in southwest Victoria. He was taken away from his family as a child and, like tens of thousands of Aboriginal children, suffered the fate of the Stolen Generation and grew up first in an orphanage and then in a family of Scottish origin in Melbourne . He then lived for many years on the streets of Melbourne and Adelaide . When he met Ruby Hunter , he built a children's home with her for Aboriginal children, made music with Hunter and formed a band.

In 1990 Roach released a music album on the subject of the stolen generation. He won the ARIA Awards twice , the Human Rights Award and a gold record . He released Jamu Dreaming in 1992 and Looking for Butter Boy in 1997 , with which he won three ARIA Awards.

Roach performed at numerous festivals and in 1992 in the USA and further in Great Britain, Germany, China, Japan and Taiwan. In the USA he met Bob Dylan .
