Ruby Hunter

Ruby Hunter (born 1955 with Murray Bridge , † February 17, 2010 in Victoria ) was an Australian singer .

Life

Hunter belonged to the Ngarrindjeri , an Aboriginal tribe . At the age of 16 she met her later life partner, the songwriter Archie Roach . From then on, both worked together musically.

In 1994, Hunter became the first Aboriginal musician to receive a record deal with a major label . Two of her albums, Thoughts Within and Feeling Good, were nominated for the ARIA Award . In 2000 she received The Deadlys Award for Best Female Artist of the Year.

Hunter died of a heart attack .
