Caroline Shaw

Caroline Adelaide Shaw (born August 1, 1982 in Greenville , North Carolina ) is an American composer , violinist and singer. In 2013 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize of Music for her Partita for 8 Voices .

life and work

Caroline Shaw began playing the violin at the age of two and graduated from Yale University with a Masters in this instrument . She also composed in childhood. In 2010 she began a PhD in composition at Princeton University . A Thomas J. Watson Fellowship also enabled her to study historical gardens. Shaw participates in various ensembles, such as the violinist in the American Contemporary Music Ensemble and as a singer in the Trinity Wall Street Choir and Roomful of Teeth .

Caroline Shaw, who sees herself more as a musician than a composer, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize of Music in 2013 for her a cappella composition Partita for 8 Voices , the 2012 debut recording of the vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth on New Amsterdam Records was born. She is one of the few women - and at the same time the youngest of all award winners - to have received this prestigious award.

On April 21, 2019 New Amsterdam and Nonesuch Records released the album Orange . It contains compositions by Shaw, recorded by the Attacca Quartet.

Caroline Shaw worked several times with rapper and producer Kanye West . Among other things, she worked as a violinist, singer and arranger on a reinterpretation of the piece Say You Will from West's album 808s & Heartbreak and as producer and singer on West's album The Life of Pablo .
