Armando Manzanero Canché (born December 7, 1935 in Mérida , Yucatán , Mexico , † December 28, 2020 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican musician , singer and composer . Manzanero was of indigenous Mayan descent and is considered one of the most important and successful composers in Mexico and Latin America of the modern era. In 2014, Manzanero was honored in the United States with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) excellent.

Life

Armando Manzanero Canché was born on December 7, 1935 in Mérida, the capital of the Yucatán state in Mexico . At the age of eight he came to the Escuela de Bellas Artes (School of Fine Arts) in his hometown, where he had his first contact with music. He later continued his music studies in Mexico City , among others with Rafael de Paz , Mario Ruiz Armengol and Zarzosa . In 1950, at the age of 15, he composed his first published melody, Nunca en el Mundo , of which more than 20 versions have been recorded internationally to date. The following year he began his career as a professional pianist , working for Lucho Gatica , Pedro Vargas and Olga Guillot , among others .

In 1957 Manzanero got a contract as musical director of the Mexican branch of CBS International . From 1958 he played as a pianist for various Latin American artists, including Pedro Vargas , Lucho Gatica and Raphael . In 1959 he recorded his first album of love songs under the title Mi Primera Grabación , and in 1960 he had his first big hit with Voy A Apagar La Luz .

In 1965 he won first prize at the Festival de la Canción in Miami with the song Cuando Estoy Contigo . In 1970 his song Somos Novios was translated by Sid Wayne , the composer of Elvis Presley . The English version of It's Impossible was sung and nominated for a Grammy Award by Perry Como , but its success was overshadowed by a court ruling by an American court convicting Manzanero of plagiarism and forcing him to surrender any income received from It's Impossible , regardless of that the original song Somos Novios was written in Spanish by Manzanero 20 years earlier.

In 2011 Manzanero became President and one of the most important directors of the Asociación Nacional de Autores y Compositores in Mexico, before that he was Vice-President from 1982 to 2011. His work to improve copyright protection strengthened the association and also led to international recognition.

Manzanero has composed more than four hundred songs; around 50 led to international success. He participated in numerous radio and television shows and recorded more than 30 music albums; he also composed the score for some films. During his more than 50-year career, Manzanero has performed worldwide, especially in São Paulo (Brazil), Buenos Aires (Argentina), El Metropolitan (Mexico), the Teresa Carreño Theater in Caracas (Venezuela), Madison Square Garden (New York, United States) as well as in numerous major cities in Europe and Asia. Works by Manzanero have been played and sung by numerous musicians, including Tito Rodríguez , Frank Sinatra , Andrea Bocelli , Raquel Bitton Tony Bennett , Elvis Presley , Alejandro Fernández , Luis Miguel , Franck Pourcel , Paul Mauriat , Ray Conniff , María Martha Serra Lima , Mina , Raphael , Roberto Carlos , Christina Aguilera , Manoella Torres , Marco Antonio Muñiz , Angélica María , José José , Tania Libertad , Lucero , Cristian Castro and Il Divo as well as the pianist Raúl Di Blasio and others.

Manzanero's most famous songs include Voy a apagar la luz , Contigo Aprendí , Adoro , No sé tú , Por Debajo de la Mesa , Esta Tarde Vi Llover (English version: Yesterday I Heard the Rain ), Somos Novios (English version: It's Impossible ), Felicidad and Nada staff .

Manzanero died in late 2020 at the age of 85 as a result of COVID-19 .
