José José
José José (born February 17, 1948 in Azcapotzalco as José Rómulo Sosa Ortiz , † September 28, 2019 in Miami ) was a Mexican pop singer who sold a double-digit million number of records (the LA Times estimated sales in 1996 at 30 million) and was nominated six times for a Grammy .
Life
José, who comes from a family of musicians, had his first vocal appearances as a teenager. In 1966 he played bass with the Bossa nova and jazz band Los PEG. His solo debut was Cuidado in 1969 , and in 1970 he became known nationwide with his song El Triste . In the following years he became such a big star that he even got an offer for a duet from Frank Sinatra in 1974 , which he could not accept due to contractual obligations. After one of his hits, he was declared a "Príncipe (de la canción)". His 1983 album Secretos is considered his most successful, and according to conservative estimates it sold four million times.
José also acted in some films such as Gavilán o Paloma and Perdóname Todo . He had alcohol and drug problems, and from the 1990s onward, his voice continued to decline and health problems increased. In recognition of his life's work, he was once again declared “Man of the Year” at the 2005 Latin Grammies . He died of pancreatic cancer in September 2019 at the age of 71 .
