Shelton Glen "Shelly" Berg (born August 18, 1955 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American jazz pianist , arranger and university professor.

Live and act

Shelly Berg's father was the trumpeter Jay Berg. From the age of six he had classical piano lessons at the Cleveland Institute of Music . At the age of 15 he moved with his family to Houston , where he participated in sessions a. a. played with Arnett Cobb . After earning a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from the University of Houston School of Music, he worked as a music teacher and also released a number of albums under his own name, which he recorded with musicians such as Peter Erskine and Chuck Berghofer . After his debut album in 1995 for DMP , he presented an Oscar Peterson tribute in 1998 , in which his trio partners Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen participated. In 2006 he arranged standards for the album Ray Sings, Basie Swings for Concord Jazz . In Los Angeles he performed frequently with Bill Watrous and appeared on several of his albums such as Bone-ified (1992) or Space Available (1995). Berg also served as musical director for Carmen Bradford , as an accompanist for Lorraine Feather , Monica Mancini , Patti Austin , Tierney Sutton and Joli Jones .

Shelly Berg initially taught at San Jacinto College in Texas before moving to Los Angeles in 1991 to teach jazz studies at the USC Thornton School of Music . In 2007 he became dean of the Frost School of Music ( University of Miami ); he was also chairman of the International Association of Jazz Educators .
