Roland Pail (born June 29, 1972 in Sankt Sebastian , Styria ) is an Austrian geophysicist and professor of astronomical and physical geodesy at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Roland Pail studied geophysics at the University of Vienna from 1991 to 1995 . In 1996 and 1997 he worked as a research assistant at the Physics Institute of the University of Bayreuth on the project "Continental Deep Drilling Program of the Federal Republic of Germany " of the DFG . He then returned as a university assistant and doctoral studies to Austria and received his doctorate in December 1999 sub auspiciis Praesidentis at the Technical University of Graz for Dr. techn. Finally, in September 2002, he completed his habilitation in theoretical geodesy. Pail stayed at the TU Graz until 2009 as a lecturer at the Institute for Navigation and Satellite Geodesy and in January 2010 accepted the call to the TU Munich , where he has since been a university professor at the chair for astronomical and physical geodesy.

Roland Pail is President of the International Association of Geodesy Commission 2 "Gravity Field", board member of the Austrian Geophysical Society , board chairman of the Center for Geodetic Earth System Research , board member of the research group satellite geodesy , member of the German Geodetic Commission and since 2019 elected member of the Leibniz Society of Sciences to Berlin .

Pail's research includes physical and numerical geodesy, with a focus on global and regional modeling of the earth's gravity field and satellite gravity field missions.
