The Cologne youth choir St. Stephan has its roots and its seat in the Catholic parish of St. Stephan in Cologne-Lindenthal .

History and repertoire

Since 1984 the young people have been singing a diverse repertoire from sacred music and gospel to pop , comedy , classical and Cologne tones to jazz . The ensemble, led by Michael Kokott since 1985 , with around 80 members between the ages of 16 and 29, is one of the largest youth choirs in Germany. For their participation in the Unheilig hit “ Born to Live ” (2010), the choir was awarded a triple gold record in 2011 , and for its participation in the “Unheilig” album “ Lights of the City ” (2012) in 2013 with a four-fold platinum Record excellent. In 2010 the choir with Unheilig was awarded the Bambi TV Prize in the "Pop National" category. A Facebook video from the Hamburg Elbe tunnel with the a cappella song " Kölsche Jung " by the Cologne rock band Brings , which was clicked a million times , brought the youth choir nationwide attention in 2015.

Highlights

Appearances with Unheilig , the Argentine star composer Lalo Schifrin , Anke Engelke , the American heavy metal band Manowar , the US rock band POD , Bläck Fööss , Höhner and others gave the musical work of the choir a versatile face. Since the 1990s, the youth choir has performed its own concerts in the Cologne Philharmonic , Lanxess Arena and Cologne Opera in front of up to 10,000 listeners. At the 2005 World Youth Day in Cologne, the choir sang in front of thousands of young people from all over the world in the Rheinenergiestadion .

The most famous choir “member” was Bill Clinton , who sang the gospel hit Oh Happy Day together with the choir at the Cologne G8 summit in June 1999 . The former choir singer Christoph Watrin was a member of the boy band US5 until 2008 . Numerous television and radio broadcasts contributed to the national reputation of the choir. The choir appeared in the television shows TV total , Harald Schmidt , The Ultimate Chartshows and in the series The Last Bull and at the Bambi Awards.

On December 23, 2016, the choir performed in front of 44,000 spectators in Cologne's Rheinenergiestadion. During the sing-along concert Loss mer Weihnachtsleeder singe, the participants remembered the victims of the attack on the Berlin Christmas market with the song We are the World .

Since 1990, numerous CDs have appeared on which the choir was also accompanied by prominent musicians, for example by the Cologne songwriter, producer and singer Florian Peil from the Cologne band Kasalla , Alfonso Garrido from the heavytones from TV Total and musicians from the WDR Big Band . The choir has also participated in many other CD productions, including CDs by Unheilig, Jupiter Jones , BAP , Bläck Fööss , Höhner , Kasalla, Thomas Godoj , WDR Big Band Cologne .

In 2009 the CD Friends was released , which contains, among other things, the anniversary song Du Belst zu Kölle , on which several Cologne celebrities (Kafi Biermann, Alexandra Kassen , Henning Krautmacher , Fritz Schramma and Bernd Stelter ) participated. The album was produced by Florian Peil. For the 2010 soccer World Cup , the choir released its own World Cup song and music video for the first time with the song Ganz far front .

Trips abroad led the choir a. a. to Prague , Paris , Vienna , Salzburg , Monaco , Rome , Barcelona , Carinthia and Amsterdam . As part of the Cologne city partnerships, the choir traveled to Liège , Tunis , Tel Aviv and Bethlehem .
