The song was written by the count , Markus Tombäne and Henning Verlage , produced and mixed by Kiko Masbaum and mastered by Sascha Bühren. The single was released under the music label Vertigo Berlin . A caricature of the count can be seen on the black and gold cover of the maxi single . The picture is composed of many small pictures and shows him as an outline with outstretched arms. The cover photo was created by Erik Weiss and designed by Dirk Rudolph .

The single was first released on March 7, 2014 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland . On January 17, 2014, Unheilig published a teaser of the song on their homepage and YouTube channel. As if it's the first time is available as a single track and maxi single on CD and for download. The maxi single contains an alternate version of the song as a B-side . From March 11 to March 13, 2014 Unheilig offered a piano version of the song as a free download from Amazon .
On March 13, 2014 Unheilig competed with the piece in the first round of the German preliminary decision Our Song for Denmark for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 against artists like Madeline Juno , Oceana and Santiano . In the end, Unheilig took second place behind Elaiza with the song We are all like one .

The music video for As if it's the first time was filmed in February 2014 at a reservoir in Zell am See (Austria) and premiered on February 21, 2014. On the one hand it shows the count moving through a winter landscape while singing the song, and on the other hand the story of a missing man. At the beginning a man wakes up lying in the snow. Disoriented, he makes his way home, with vague memories of his family. In the meantime, his wife reports a missing person to the police. On the way home, the man passes a soccer field, where he watches the children play. Suddenly a boy stands next to him and hands him an apple, which he eats. The man passes a train station and ends up in his own garden, where his wife discovers him. She storms out to him, they look at each other, and finally the man jumps into an adjacent lake. The length of the video is 3:05 minutes. Directed by Markus Gerwinat. The video was produced by QFilmproduktion.

In Austria the single reached position 38 and stayed in the charts for two weeks. In Switzerland, the single reached position 56 in the single charts in one week.
For Unheilig this is the eleventh chart success in Germany as well as the eighth chart success in Austria and the sixth in Switzerland. In Germany, the single represents the fifth top 10 success . Also for the fifth time, an Unheilig single was simultaneously placed in all DA-CH countries.
