The profession of lighting designer (Engl. Lighting Designer ) is first in the Anglo-American countries, later coming over the Netherlands in the German-speaking countries for training profession.

Traditionally, the lighting design on the stage was determined by the set designer and / or the director . The lighting master was responsible for the technical implementation of the director's team's wishes. Few lighting masters achieved their own design profile (probably Max Keller as the first in Germany at the Münchner Kammerspiele , and people like Hanns Haas and Heinrich Brunke (with Robert Wilson )).

Today, stage lighting designers are recruited from the 'manual' area (lighting technician, lighting supervisor) as well as from various fields of study and from the independent theater scene.

architecture

In the field of architecture , the lighting design was traditionally carried out by the architect or the interior designer . Specialized planners calculate the illuminance levels to be complied with in accordance with various standards and the technology required for this. Today there are offices that specialize in architectural lighting design and are mainly used for large-scale projects. Theatrical lighting designers are rarely engaged in this area.

Neither Lichtgestalter nor Lighting Designer is a protected professional title.

education

Lighting design for buildings and outdoor spaces is mostly taught as a secondary aspect in architecture studies. The Brandi Institute for Light and Design in Hamburg offers part-time training for lighting designers. The program is designed as an additional qualification for architects, engineers and interior and landscape architects.
