Velile (2010)

Velile Mchunu (* 1973 in KwaMashu , Natal , South Africa , known as Velile ) is a South African singer and musical artist . She became known in particular through the song Helele , which was used by RTL and Swiss television in reporting on the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, and in Germany also as the leading actress in the Hamburg production of the musical Der König der Löwen .

Life

Mchunu grew up in a township near the South African city of Durban and attended the acting school "Committed Artist Academy" in Johannesburg . In 1999 she performed with Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson on Nelson Mandela's birthday. In Hamburg she has been playing the main role of the shaman Rafiki in the musical The Lion King for several years . She also appeared in the musical Sarafina and the film of the same name. Other stations in her career also included productions such as Robens a Cruise-ou , Umoja , Drums and Dreams and Matamata . She also went on tour with the musicals Izidumo and Ipi Ntombi . In 2006 she worked as a soloist in the tour production "Best of Musical".

In 2010 the song Helele, sung on isiZulu , was released by Velile and the Danish musician duo Safri Duo on the occasion of the 2010 World Cup . The song is featured on both Velile's debut album, which was released on June 18, 2010, as well as on the Safri duo's greatest hits album. Was produced Helele just like Tales from Africa from Flensburg's production team Elephant Music , which has also composed most of the album in collaboration with Velile. The album reached number 3 in the German charts. Their third single Injabulo was released in July 2011 and their second studio album Lion Queen followed on July 22, 2011.

Velile has been under contract with Hanseatic Music Group since the beginning of 2013. In 2015 she can be heard as a background singer on the album Aeria by Oonagh .
