The film is about a murder plot by the CIA against North Korea's head of state Kim Jong-un during an interview by a US showmaster . The film was shot in Canada. Prior to its release, the film sparked political controversy and terrorist attacks on moviegoers, which resulted in Sony Pictures being temporarily canceled. Finally, from December 25, 2014, the film was shown in 331 of the planned 2,000 to 3,000 cinemas and made available digitally on various paid VoD and video portals . The film was released in German-speaking countries in early February 2015.

action

The trash -TV presenter Dave Skylark and his producer Aaron Rapaport lead a highly successful celebrity talk show called Skylark Tonight , in which they famous people surprising details elicit their lives. Among other things, Eminem states in their show that they only write songs about things that scare him, and that he only write his homophobic lyrics because he is homosexual himself.

Aaron meets an old friend who works in the serious news business and who thinks Skylark's Show is unimportant junk. Then Aaron wants to put his show on a more serious track, for example by inviting politicians in the future. That gives Dave the idea to invite North Korea's dictator Kim Jong-un , who is a fan of Skylark Tonight , to his show. So Aaron makes an interview request, which is answered positively. He is invited to a meeting in China to discuss everything else. But there he doesn't meet Kim Jong-un personally, as expected, but his attractive employee Sook. From this moment on, Rapaport only has eyes for her. Rapaport is somewhat disappointed that not much “interpersonal” happens between them at this meeting.

Before they start their journey, the CIA, in the person of the attractive agent Lacey, asks them to attempt a murder on Kim Jong-un. To do this, Skylark is supposed to shake the dictator's hand while he is carrying a sticky tape soaked in riz . Skylark prefers to shoot Kim in front of the camera, survive the guards' bullets with a bulletproof vest and flee through a tunnel, only to be evacuated by SEAL Team Six at the end so that he can write a book about it. Ultimately, Skylark can be convinced that this plan would fail and that the original plan should be carried out.

Arrived at the dictator's palace, the guards discover the ricin in Skylark's luggage and mistake it for chewing gum. A security guard chews the plaster and shows symptoms of poisoning the next day. Now that there is no more ricin, the CIA sends a drone with a new poison to North Korea. Aaron picks it up outside, but is threatened by a tiger. Eventually he is picked up by soldiers and has to hide the capsule in his rectum. Back at the palace, Aaron and Dave can get the ricin out of the capsule.

In addition, some surprises await them first: From the well-stocked supermarket to the well-fed boy, the country appears unexpectedly wealthy, and the dictator turns out to be a good and likeable friend and deeply human to Skylark. They spend a great day together, driving tanks and listening to Katy Perry's music . Kim admits to Skylark a deep fathering complex . Worried about this development, Rapaport decides to kill Kim himself, but is stopped by Skylark - you don't kill friends.

Finally, however, Skylark realizes that his image of Kim is based on a cleverly staged propaganda, the prosperity shown at the beginning is only feigned and Kim is already playing with the idea of attacking America with nuclear missiles. He changes his mind and wants to carry out the murder. Meanwhile, Kim's PR manager Sook reveals hatred for her leader to Rapaport, but warns that the planned assassination attempt will not lead her to the goal. Rather, the godlike Kim should be exposed as a weak person during the interview. This interview will eventually be carried out.

The unmasking takes place less through the real facts (mentioned in the film) (labor camps, famines, oppression; see human rights situation in North Korea ), but through exposing Kim's father complex. Thus the leader, worshiped as God, shows human weakness and the personality cult around Kim is broken. He wants to shoot Skylark out of hatred for his exposure. However, Skylark survives by means of a bulletproof vest .

Skylark, Rapaport and Sook flee and hijack Kim's tank. A battle ensues between them and Kim, in the course of which Kim is shot down with his attack helicopter by the Skylark-controlled tank before Kim can clear the nuclear ICBMs for shooting. After Kim's death, Sook takes her to a mine tunnel, at the other end of which the two are rescued by Seal Team Six in a rubber dinghy. Sook stays behind in North Korea, organizes the peaceful turnaround and free elections, Skylark and Rapaport are celebrated as heroes in their homeland.

publication

The film had its world premiere on December 11, 2014 in Los Angeles .

After many large cinema chains in the USA decided, for security reasons, not to include the film in their programs on December 25th as planned, Sony announced on December 17th that it did not want to release the film under these circumstances. A short time later, Sony announced that it had no further release plans for the film.

On December 19, 2014, Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures, contradicted the cancellation. The film should be released, only the cinema release was canceled. That statement was confirmed on US television by a Sony attorney on December 22, 2014. He announced that the film would be distributed and that direct-to-DVD publication or sale to a video-on-demand provider would be possible, but that Sony had not yet come across any interested parties. A free publication on YouTube is not excluded. One wishes "that the American public can see this film."

On December 24, 2014, Sony Pictures announced that the film would open on Christmas Day as planned, but only in at least 200 independent cinemas instead of the planned 2000 to 3000 cinemas. Sony also announced that the film would also be available for purchase or rental on the Internet, including on YouTube, Google Play or Xbox Video and on a website specially set up for this purpose. However, the publication was initially limited to the US market.

On December 25, 2014, the film was released in 331 independent cinemas and online. The first day he made a million dollars.

As originally planned, the cinema release in Germany took place on February 5, 2015, and in Austria on February 6.

reception

Controversy

Protests from North Korea

In July 2014, North Korean UN Ambassador Ja Song Nam complained to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon about the plot of the planned film. The official complaint stated that producing and publishing a film about the assassination of an incumbent head of state was not only an “act of war” but also “undisguised support for terrorism ”.

After US President Barack Obama had spoken out in favor of a release of the film and the comedy started in some cinemas on December 25, 2014, the North Korean National Defense Commission had a spokesman say that Obama was "like a monkey in a jungle “Behave. If the US government adheres to its "arrogant and criminal" course, North Korea will meet "with inescapable fatal blows".

Hacker attack on Sony Pictures

In November 2014, Sony Pictures was exposed to a hacker attack in which unreleased films and large amounts of internal data were stolen. The interview was also stolen from the company's servers. The hackers initially demanded a previously unknown amount of money from the Sony bosses. Subsequently, Sony was blackmailed by hitherto unknown people that the data would be published if the film The Interview was not withdrawn.

On December 16, 2014, the previously unknown Guardians of Peace group threatened to attack cinemas in which the film was being shown. The message concluded with the words "Remember September 11, 2001. "

On December 18, the film's most sensitive scene, which shows the fictional death of Kim Jong Un, was leaked on the Internet. Sony then canceled the New York premiere of the film planned for December 18 . The main actors Seth Rogen and James Franco subsequently canceled all planned media appearances to promote the film.

US President Barack Obama let it be known through his spokesman that he considered the threats to be a "serious matter of national security". There will be an "appropriate response" from the US government.

According to US Senator John McCain , Sony's decision not to release the film creates a “worrying precedent” that only strengthens the perpetrators and encourages them to use the cyber weapon even more aggressively in the future. McCain's party colleague Newt Gingrich commented on the events with the words: "This week the US lost its first cyber war".

On December 19, 2014, the US government officially accused the North Korean government of being responsible for the attacks and announced appropriate consequences. Barack Obama also criticized Sony Pictures' buckling because "some dictator in any place" should not be able to enforce censorship in the United States.

Until December 20, 2014 it was not clear whether North Korea with the secret service department " Office 121 " was behind the massive theft of data from Sony's company network. The government in Pyongyang repeatedly denied the allegations and suggested that the United States conduct a joint investigation into the cyberattacks, otherwise it too threatened "serious consequences". However, the US government did not accept this proposal and tightened its economic sanctions against North Korea on January 2, 2015, which now also include new punitive measures against ten government officials and three organizations and companies.

On January 15, 2015, John McAfee , the founder of the computer security company McAfee, stated in an interview that he had contact with the hackers in the attack on Sony, whose names they knew and could guarantee that North Korea was not responsible for the hacking attack on Sony Pictures Entertainment be responsible. The FBI's allegations against North Korea are not tenable. However, he will not reveal the names of the hackers because he does not want to be an informant ("nark"). The hackers are libertarian civil rights activists who reject the restrictions and restrictions of the music and film industry on art. McAfee said the US government had imposed unjustified sanctions on North Korea based on false allegations made by the FBI.

Reviews

David Steinitz wrote in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that Seth Rogen and his co-author Evan Goldberg, after they had "already presented a pretty nasty Hollywood parody" with the doomsday comedy Das ist das at the end of 2013, would "step up a gear": " of course it's not about Kim Jong Un at all, who turns out to be a dork in the end […], but about what cinema could do today if it really wanted to. Anarchy, travesty, slapstick […] only offer very few films today. ”The film is funny - and above all, much more of a smart self-parody of US show business than a degradation of North Korea. Jörg Buttgereit from epd Film , on the other hand, judged that The Interview was "a haughty, disrespectful disparagement of the dictator Kim Jong-un", "a crude comedy whose political relevance and originality suffered from the late-pubescent faecal humor of Rogen and Franco". The film could "not possibly live up to the expectations arising from the political hustle and bustle."

The Beijing newspaper Global Times, affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party, commented that China has also been portrayed in a negative light in Hollywood products in the past. Now that the Chinese market has turned into a gold mine for US films, Hollywood has begun to put on ever friendlier faces just to attract more Chinese viewers. The film is "a sign of senseless cultural ignorance" of the USA.

A few days after the film was temporarily suspended by Sony, the film achieved a rating of 10 out of 10 stars in the IMDb . An anonymous user had called on December 19, 2014, the Image board 4chan . The film did not appear in the top 250, presumably due to an algorithm. The Interview now has a rating of 6.5 out of 10 stars. At Metacritic , the film received a rating of 52 out of 100 points.

Trivia

  • A recurring theme in the film is "being potted" , being seduced into an action or opinion. This happens either through a beautiful agent (compare Romeo ) or the propaganda Kim jong-uns.
  • At a celebration for the 1000th Skylark Tonight broadcast , one of the editors quoted the (abbreviated) inscription on the One Ring :
original

"A ring to enslave them, to find them all,
to drift into darkness and to bind them forever"

The interview

"A ring to rule them,
drive them into the dark and bind them forever"

  • On the one hand, Skylark often refers to itself as Frodo or Bilbo Baggins , with its producer Aaron Rapaport then embodies Gandalf or Sam (weis) Gamgee , which should show how much Skylark is dependent on Rapaport. Skylark also compares himself to Gollum , who needs his treasure (the One Ring), and says: "Smeagol needs Aaron".
  • When a fight breaks out between the cameramen and Rapaport and Sook during the interview in the adjoining rooms, Rapaport and a cameraman bite off each other's fingers, as Gollum does in a scene in The Lord of the Rings with Frodo Baggins.
