Taghit ( Arabic تاغيت, Tifinagh script ⵜⴰⵖⵉⵜ ) is a small Algerian town and capital of the district of the same name in the province ( wilaya ) Bechar . In 2007, the Taghit National Park, covering around 250,000 hectares, was inaugurated.

location

Taghit is an oasis town on the Oued Zousfana , which is water-bearing only in winter and spring, and is about 95 kilometers (driving distance) south of the provincial capital Bechar . To the east of the city is the deserted sand dune landscape of the Western Great Erg . To the west lies Jbel Baroun and the landscape becomes rockier and rockier overall; Here, too, there are only a few villages left up to the border to Morocco , which is about 100 kilometers away .

population

The city's inhabitants are almost exclusively Berbers who speak their native dialect - in addition to Arabic; the literacy rate is around 80%, with the male population slightly higher than the female population.

Infrastructure

Around 90–95% of the approximately 1,500 houses are connected to the public water and power supply as well as to the sewage network. TV and mobile phone reception are also possible. There is a petrol station, a pharmacy and a health station in the village where minor illnesses can be treated; the closest hospital is in Bechar.

economy

The most important source of income was and is the date palm groves along the mostly dried up river bank; the half-dried fruits are sold in the markets in the west of the country. Grain, vegetables and fruit ( pomegranates , prickly pears ) are grown between the palm trees for self-sufficiency . The agriculturally usable area is about 2500 hectares, of which more than half can be irrigated. Sheep, goats and chickens are also raised. Tourism has played an increasingly important role in the last few decades.

history

As with most Berber towns, dates and facts about the history of Taghit have only been passed down orally - the place is likely to have been settled in ancient times; Thousands of years old rock drawings - including elephants - indicate migrating hunters and nomads in even older times, some of which gradually settled down around 2000 to 3000 years ago. In 1903, around 4,000 Berbers from the Zayanes tribe besieged the 300-strong French garrison in the city, but they were able to successfully repel the attack.

Attractions

  • The old town center , built from rammed earth and palm trunks, has fallen into serious disrepair. The walls of the new houses are made of hollow blocks ; the stairs and ceilings are made of concrete.
  • One-day or multi-day excursions into the sandy and / or stone deserts of the area are offered by local organizers.
  • There are petroglyphs on several rocks in the western area of the village, the age of which is likely to be around 2000 (riders) to 4000 (wild animals) years.
