Easter (dt. Easter ) is a music album of Patti Smith Group , which in March 1978 Arista Records was released. The album produced by Jimmy Iovine is considered the group's commercial breakthrough. The single Because the Night , written by Smith and Bruce Springsteen , reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
background
Unlike its two previous albums, the album contained a variety of musical styles, such as classic rock 'n' roll , folk and pop music . In addition to the regular cast of the group, guest musicians such as Allen Lanier , the keyboardist of Blue Öyster Cult , played on various pieces . The cover photography was done by Lynn Goldsmith and the liner notes were shot by Cindy Black and Robert Mapplethorpe .
In addition to the religious title, the album shows a biblical or Christian imagery in many places. Privilege (Set Me Free) is a reference to the British film Privilege ; the text is based on Psalm 23. The last sentence of the liner notes is a quote from the second letter to Timothy 4: 7 - I fought the good fight, finished the run ...
reception
The album received mostly positive reviews. Dave Marsh called it transcendent and fulfilled in Rolling Stone magazine . Nick Tosches describes it as an album full of Christian obsessions, specifically death and resurrection, and called it Smith's best work.
William Ruhlmann awarded four and a half out of five stars on Allmusic and wrote about the album:
“Easter… was Smith's most commercial-sounding effort yet and, due to the inclusion of Springsteen's Because the Night ... a Top Ten hit, it became her biggest seller ... Certainly, a song that proclaimed, Love is an angel disguised as lust / Here in our bed until the morning comes, was pushing the limits of pop radio ... So, Easter turned out to be the best compromise Smith achieved between her artistic and commercial aspirations. "
"Easter ... was Smith's most commercial-sounding performance to date, largely with the inclusion of Springsteen's Because the Night ... a top ten hit that became her biggest hit ... Sure, a song that proclaimed Love Is." an angel disguised as lust / Here in our bed until morning, pushed the boundaries of pop radio ... So Easter came up with the best compromise Smith could reach between her artistic and commercial demands. "
